Metallica are a famous American heavy metal band that originated in Los Angeles, California. The group was formed in 1981 with the following members: James Hetfield on the lead vocals, guitars, and founder of the band; Lars Ulrich on drums and co-founder of Metallica; Kirt Hammet the lead guitarist; and Robert Trujillo on bass guitar. Their previous member Dave Mustaine went to create his own band which is now called Megadeth while Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton, and Jason Newsted are all former bassists. While they were looking for a more permanent bass guitarist, Bob Rock, who was also their long time producer (he produced all of their albums from 1990 until 2003), played temporary bass guitar for the band until they have finally found Trujillo.
Together with their co thrash metal peers (namely Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax), Metallica became popular in the heavy metal underground scene. However, it was on their third album launch called Master of Puppets when they finally got noticed by the public and recording companies. Their fifth album became a commercial success and a controversial at that, being the “Black Album” much to the contempt of some highly religious people. All in all, the band has sold more than 52 million albums in United States alone, making them the fourth best selling band in the U.S. The group is still active today.
